American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
ANSI is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the U.S. voluntary standards and conformity assessment system and strengthening its impact, both domestically and internationally. ANSI was founded in 1918 with the mission of enhancing both the global competitiveness of U.S. businesses and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards, conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity. It encompasses practically every industry, the Institute represents the diverse interests of more than 270,000 companies and organizations, and 30 million professionals worldwide.
ANSI currently provides a forum for more than 240 ANSI-accredited standards developers representing approximately 200 distinct organizations in the private and public sectors. These groups work cooperatively to develop voluntary national consensus standards and American National Standards (ANS). As of 2017, there were approximately 10,500 such documents.
In order to maintain ANSI accreditation, standards developers are required to consistently adhere to a set of requirements or procedures known as the "ANSI Essential Requirements: Due process requirements for American National Standards", that govern the consensus development process.
ANSI is the official U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and, via the U.S. National Committee, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Website: https://www.ansi.org/about_ansi/overview/overview?menuid=1
