ALD Scholarships & Grants

Academy of Laser Dentistry's
Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarships & Grants

The Academy of Laser Dentistry’s Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Scholarships and Grants Program goal is to promote the advancement of dental laser education and clinical research. The program was established over 20 years ago and named to honor the memory, achievements and commitments of the late Dr. Eugene M. Seidner the academy’s 1996-1997 president.
Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship Program
The Student Scholarship Program encourages students in the different dental disciplines to deepen their knowledge of the use of lasers in dentistry. The program provides financial assistance enabling successful applicants to present their work at the Academy's annual conference. This allows the recipient to participate in the educational lectures and workshops at the conference. The scholarship program is aimed to advance research and the study of lasers and light based technologies in their safe and effective use in oral healthcare in the academic environment. Since inception, more than 35 students from all over the world have been honored.

Who is Eligible?
Applicants must be either an undergraduate, pre-doctoral student, or graduate dental student in a general or specialty program. Applicants are eligible through their first year after graduation of an accredited dental program. Applicants must be nominated by a university faculty member or an ALD member. To be considered for the Seidner Student Scholarship all documents must be received by October 31st of each year for consideration for the following annual conference.
Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Research Grant Program
The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Research Grant is intended to promote the advancement of dental laser technology education and clinical research. Grant awards of $20,000.00 may be awarded annually to individuals to promote basic and applied clinical research for the uses of lasers in dentistry. These include, but are not limited to biological responses to light, novel or innovative clinical protocols and procedures, laser device development, novel approaches to lasers in dental education, initiatives to enhance public acceptance of lasers, and behavioral approaches to using lasers in clinics. The project has to broadly assess the role of lasers of dentistry, irrespective of the nature of laser use for surgical, diagnostic, antimicrobial, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, imaging, or biomaterials applications. Research proposals on competing designs or devices are not encouraged.

Who is Eligible and How to Apply?
Primary applicants or at least one team member must a be member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry for the past 3 years prior to application. The applicants should be able to demonstrate they are capable of conducting research that meets the primary
objective of this award. There are no age or citizenship requirements. Applications may be downloaded or received by contacting the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Completed applications must be received by ALD by the end of December each year for consideration
for the following annual conference.
LiD-SIG's Relationship to the ALD's Scholarship and Grants Programs
The membership of the ADEA LiD-SIG is actively promoting this scholarship and grants program working with students and their faculty encouraging and mentioning them in their research and submittal. Several past recipients have become world renown researchers including Dr. Praveen Arany, who later became an honored researcher at the National Institute of Health, and now at the University at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine, as well as, a Past-Chair of the ADEA LiD-SIG.
